What is unique about you?

If you want a more connected, engaged, and high-performing team, focus on two essential human needs:
Uniqueness and Belonging.
Most leaders intuitively understand belonging—creating an environment where people feel included, supported, and part of something bigger. But uniqueness? That’s where many leaders miss a powerful opportunity. Every person on your team wants to be seen for what makes them distinct—their strengths, their perspective, their “secret weapon.”
So here’s a leadership challenge:
Do you actually know what makes each member of your team unique? Have you ever asked them?
When you take the time to uncover those hidden strengths, something shifts:
* You start placing people in roles where they can truly excel
* You create moments for their talents to shine
* You show them they’re valued for more than just their job description
Over the years, I’ve seen this come to life in unexpected ways.
In one organization after another, I watched individuals—analysts, processors, quiet contributors—step onto a stage in Toastmasters and transform. Confident. Articulate. Energized.
It made me wonder:
How many of their leaders had any idea this talent even existed?
That’s the power of being seen. Great leaders don’t just manage performance—they discover potential.
A simple but impactful step:
Conduct a “uniqueness inventory” with your team.
Ask questions like:
* “What’s a strength you don’t get to use enough?”
* “What’s a talent you wish more people knew about?”
* “When do you feel at your absolute best at work?”
These conversations unlock engagement, confidence, and trust. Because when people feel both valued for who they are and connected to where they belong, that’s when teams truly thrive.
